The cold season, or winter, is a period of the year when temperatures are lower than average.  Winter is caused by the axis of Earth being oriented away from the sun. The hemisphere tilted toward the sun receives more energy, while the opposite hemisphere receives less energy. This results in temperatures in the Northern Hemisphere being colder than average, while temperatures in the Southern Hemisphere are warmer than average. This temperature contrast between the hemispheres results in the jet stream, which travels from west to east in the troposphere, being located further south in the Northern Hemisphere. This results in the winter air masses being colder, since the colder air sinks to the surface in the Northern Hemisphere, but rises in the Southern Hemisphere. The cold season is also called the winter season,  since the word winter is often used to denote the coldest months of the year.
