Functional isomerism describes molecules that have the same chemical formula and the same structures, but different types of bonds are present between atoms. For example, ethanol and dimethyl ether are isomers of each other. They have the same atomic composition (C2H6O) and the same connectivities, but their functional groups (OH in ethanol, CH3 in dimethyl ether) are different.
